Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tears
ACL Reconstruction
Most common sports ligament injury, usually occurring during sudden pivoting or cutting movements.

Medial/Lateral Collateral Ligament (MCL/LCL) Injuries
Collateral Ligament Repair
Resulting from direct blows to the inner or outer side of the knee.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Tears
PCL Reconstruction
Commonly from dashboard injuries during accidents or falling on a bent knee.

Multi-Ligament Injuries
Complex Knee Injuries
Involving two or more ligaments, often from severe sports injuries or high-energy trauma.
What are Ligament Injuries?
The knee has four major ligaments — Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL), and Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) — that work together to provide stability during walking, running, jumping, and pivoting movements. When these ligaments are stretched beyond their limits, they can be partially torn (sprained) or completely ruptured — causing pain, swelling, instability, and inability to bear weight.
- Function of Ligaments:Ligaments are tough, fibrous bands connecting bones and stabilising joints. They prevent excessive and abnormal movements in the knees.
- Causes of Injury:Most common in sports like football, cricket, basketball, or from road traffic accidents due to excessive bending or torsional force.
- The Need for Treatment:While mild sprains can heal with rest and physiotherapy, complete tears—especially of the ACL—typically require surgical reconstruction to restore knee stability and prevent long-term arthritis.
Understanding Ligament Injuries & Treatments
Types of Ligament Injuries
Ligament injuries can range from mild sprains to complete tears, affecting joint stability and function.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tear
The most commonly reconstructed ligament. typically occurs during sudden pivoting or landing from a jump, causing instability.
Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Tear
Usually results from a direct blow to the front of the knee (dashboard injury). May cause posterior knee pain and instability.
Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) Injury
Caused by a blow to the outer side of the knee. Common in contact sports. Most heal with bracing and physiotherapy.
Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) Injury
Results from a blow to the inner knee. Isolated LCL tears can heal conservatively; combined injuries may need surgery.
Multi-Ligament Injuries
Involves two or more ligaments — often from high-energy trauma. These are complex injuries requiring careful surgical planning.
Meniscal Tears
Ligament injuries frequently occur alongside meniscal (cartilage) tears. Both can be addressed during the same procedure.

Partial tears may heal with physiotherapy, but complete ACL tears do not heal on their own. Without reconstruction, the knee remains unstable, increasing risk of meniscal tears and early arthritis.
Typically 9-12 months for contact sports. Non-contact activities can resume at 4-6 months with clearance.
Most commonly hamstring tendon or patellar tendon autograft. Dr. Khemani selects based on your age, sport, and anatomy.
Performed under spinal/epidural anaesthesia. Post-operative pain is well-managed with medications and nerve blocks. Arthroscopic surgery causes significantly less pain than open surgery.
With proper reconstruction and rehabilitation, most patients regain 90-100% of their pre-injury function.
